SketchUp 2020 is selected for this workflow. This page does not assume your file was saved in 2021; the checker reads the actual header. Check the uploaded file's actual version, then convert and download.

Why can't 2020
open a 2021 SKP?

A shared extension does not mean a shared file format. The older application needs a format its file reader understands.

The same .skp extension

SketchUp 2021 saves in the modern versionless format. SketchUp 2020 uses an older, version-specific reader. Even a simple model can encounter a newer-version error when saved in a format that reader cannot interpret.

Versionless has a boundary

Modern-format compatibility does not promise support in every historical SketchUp release. 2020 belongs to the legacy generation. Renaming the file or placing 2020 in its name cannot change that boundary.

Create a genuine legacy copy

Conversion rewrites a separate SKP for the selected target format. Open that copy in 2020 to check the result. Rewriting the format does not give the older application newer rendering or modeling tools.

See SketchUp's saving and format guidance and newer-version error guide. That error alone does not prove corruption. For viewing, the official guide suggests a current release or SketchUp for Web; editing in 2020 needs a separately tested legacy copy.

Why convert 2021
to 2020?

Pick the destination version for a real recipient or project requirement.

A project delivered to a SketchUp 2020 team

A client or consultant may still edit a project in 2020. Provide a legacy copy for that agreed environment and keep your newer master separate so changes can be tracked between revisions.

A client needs to edit

If a client works in 2020, screenshots alone may not meet their needs. A converted SKP gives them a model to test and edit in their environment. Agree on required edits and views, and keep the 2021 source as the master.

A controlled project handoff

A project may have an agreed 2020 delivery format for consultants or shared workstations. Use a named revision and compare dimensions and scene states before sharing. Conversion does not validate the recipient's extensions or external assets.

SketchUp 2021
and 2020: what differs?

Understand the tools behind the source model before accepting its legacy copy.

SOURCE · SKETCHUP 2021

The start of the versionless SKP generation

SketchUp introduced its versionless format with release 21.0. This is a meaningful file-format boundary when delivering a model to a 2020 or earlier desktop reader.

Keep the 2021 master and verify the output header, geometry, and saved views. A header check confirms the declared format, not the fidelity of every model feature.

TARGET · SKETCHUP 2020

Tags and object visibility in Outliner

SketchUp 2020 uses Tags terminology and adds object visibility controls to Outliner. These help the recipient inspect groups, components, and model visibility in a legacy project.

Review nested groups, tags, and saved scene states. Keep the source presentation images available to compare against the 2020 copy.

Feature sources: official SketchUp 2021 format and release guidance and official SketchUp 2020 release information. The delivery checks are practical recommendations, not verified guarantees about preservation by this converter.

What to check after conversion

Opening a file and preserving its intended appearance are separate checks.

How to convert 2021 to 2020

  1. 01

    Upload and check

Keep your 2021 master. Choose a .skp file up to 100 MiB and check its actual file-header version. Header detection does not validate the complete model.

  2. 02

    Convert to 2020

Confirm SketchUp 2020 is selected and start conversion. Keep the page open while processing. You can cancel the request or retry if shared capacity is busy.

  3. 03

    Download and inspect

Save the output as a separate copy, open it in SketchUp 2020, and compare a known dimension, materials, component placement, and scenes with the original.

Prepare a useful
2020 delivery.

Inspect nested components, tag visibility, and hidden objects in each delivery scene. Include reference views and note any known differences. Conversion does not guarantee lossless results.

  • Keep the original source model
  • Verify geometry and dimensions
  • Review textures and components
  • Check scene visibility
  • Label your copy: model-2020-r01.skp

2021 to 2020 conversion FAQ

Answers for this specific model handoff.

Can I convert SketchUp 2021 to 2020 here?

The converter exposes SketchUp 2020 as a legacy output target for this modern-to-legacy workflow. Success depends on the actual input model; not every source/target pair has been independently tested in desktop SketchUp. Upload one SKP file up to 100 MiB, check its file-header version, then convert it to SketchUp 2020. This page preselects 2020, but you can change the target. Keep the source and inspect the converted copy in the destination application.

Why can't SketchUp 2020 open my 2021 file?

SketchUp 2021 writes the modern versionless SKP format. The older 2020 reader expects a legacy format. The same .skp extension does not make these formats interchangeable. A legacy conversion addresses that format mismatch without adding newer application features.

Can I save directly to 2020 from SketchUp 2021?

Current supported SketchUp releases no longer offer saving to older unsupported SKP formats. Save As options in older releases can differ; check your installed version first. Use a separate conversion workflow when a recipient specifically needs a legacy file. Renaming a file or changing the filename's year does not rewrite its internal format.

What should I check in the SketchUp 2020 Tags and Outliner panels?

Review tag assignments, nested groups and components, hidden objects, and saved scene visibility. Compare with reference images from the source. Format conversion alone does not verify that the receiving model displays exactly as intended.

Will all model features and textures survive conversion?

Lossless conversion is not guaranteed. Check geometry, units, materials, components, and scenes in SketchUp 2020. Inspect nested components, tag visibility, and hidden objects in each delivery scene. Conversion does not install extensions or convert separate LayOut documents.

Is conversion free, and are files uploaded?

Each signed-in account gets one free successful conversion; further conversions use available daily check-in rewards, purchased single-file conversions, or active Premium. Selecting a file keeps it local; checking and converting each upload the full file to our processor. There is no saved file history. See the privacy policy for processing and transport details. Shared processing capacity may require a retry.

Will conversion make my model faster in SketchUp 2020?

A different file format does not guarantee better performance or a smaller model. Geometry, texture sizes, hardware, and application capabilities still determine how the model behaves. Test your delivery copy on the recipient's actual setup.

Do I need 2020 if the recipient uses a newer version?

Choose the target the recipient actually requires. If both parties can use a compatible modern SketchUp release, try the original file first. Make a legacy copy when it is needed for the agreed editing or delivery workflow.

Choose the version required by the person receiving your model.
