From a 2025 model
to a 2020 workflow.

A different file format is needed when handing a newer model to a legacy SketchUp installation.

SOURCE · SKETCHUP 2025

A newer SKP format

SketchUp 2025 saves in the versionless SKP format. Compatibility between supported modern releases does not mean that SketchUp 2020 can read that same file.

TARGET · SKETCHUP 2020

A legacy SKP copy

Choose the 2020 target to rewrite the model into its older SKP format. The result remains a SketchUp file. Open it in SketchUp 2020 and inspect the model before your handoff.

SketchUp's official saving guidance explains the versionless format and removal of saving to older unsupported formats. For opening errors, see the newer-version error guide.

Why can't SketchUp 2020
open a 2025 SKP file?

Both files end in .skp, but their internal file formats belong to different generations.

The extension stays the same

A .skp filename tells you that a file is a SketchUp model. It does not mean that every SketchUp release understands the data inside it. A model saved in the newer format can trigger a newer-version error in SketchUp 2020.

The 2020 reader predates the format

SketchUp 2020 expects its legacy file format. SketchUp 2025 saves in the modern versionless format. That newer format does not make the older 2020 file reader forward-compatible, even for a model with simple geometry.

The file needs to be rewritten

Renaming the model, changing its extension, or putting 2020 in its filename does not change the internal format. Conversion must create an actual 2020-format SKP copy that the receiving application can attempt to read.

What does “versionless” mean here? SketchUp describes compatibility between supported releases using the modern format. It does not promise compatibility with every historical release. SketchUp 2020 belongs to the older format generation.

File compatibility and feature compatibility are separate. A 2020-format copy addresses the file-reading barrier. It does not bring 2025's Photoreal Materials or Environments into the 2020 application. Inspect the converted model's geometry, textures, and scene visibility before delivery.

A newer-version message alone does not establish that your file is corrupt. If you only need to view the original, SketchUp's official error guide suggests a current SketchUp release or SketchUp for Web. If the recipient must edit in 2020, create a 2020-format copy and test it there. See also the official file-format guidance.

Why convert SketchUp
2025 to 2020?

The destination version should follow the person receiving the model. These are situations where a 2020 copy can help.

A client needs an editable model

You design in 2025, but your client reviews and edits in 2020. A legacy SKP copy lets them try the model in their existing workflow instead of relying only on screenshots. Confirm which parts they need to edit before delivery.

A project team uses a fixed version

A consultant, classroom, or project workstation may be set up around SketchUp 2020. If that is the agreed delivery version, a converted copy provides a file to validate against that environment while you retain the 2025 master.

A newer asset joins an older project

A furniture component or building model saved in 2025 may need to join a project still being edited in 2020. Convert the asset separately, verify its scale and materials, then test it in a copy of the receiving project.

Choose 2020 because the recipient requires it. If everyone can open the original model in a compatible modern release, a legacy conversion may be unnecessary. A converted file does not add newer features to the older application.

Two releases.
Different priorities.

Understanding the authoring tools helps you decide what to deliver and what to verify after conversion.

SKETCHUP 2025

Richer visual presentation

Photoreal Materials, PBR texture generation, and Environments expand how a model communicates finishes and lighting. Updated Trimble Connect tools support model exchange, while Apply Tags to Scenes helps manage visibility.

For a 2020 handoff, include reference views of important finishes and scene states alongside the editable model.

SKETCHUP 2020

Model structure and visibility

The 2020 release uses Tags terminology and improves Outliner with object visibility controls and visibility-state indicators. These tools help a recipient inspect the organization of a delivered model.

Prepare clear groups and component names. Review nested objects and scene visibility in the actual destination installation.

Feature references: SketchUp 2025.0 release notes and SketchUp 2020.0 release notes (PDF). The handoff recommendations here are practical checks, not guarantees about this converter's preservation of each feature.

What changes in a
2025 to 2020 handoff?

Opening the file is the first check. Appearance, visibility, and project dependencies need a separate review.

How to convert 2025 to 2020

Keep your source model and make a separate copy for the recipient.

  1. 01

    Upload and check the source

Choose your SketchUp 2025 SKP file, up to 100 MiB. Click Check file version to read its header before converting.

  2. 02

    Convert to SketchUp 2020

Leave the target set to SketchUp 2020 and start conversion. Keep this page open while the model is processed.

  3. 03

    Download and review

Download the converted SKP, open it in SketchUp 2020, and check the model before sending it to a client or teammate.

Check the model

A successful download verifies the conversion response, not visual fidelity. Newer features may change or be unavailable in the older application.

  • Geometry and model dimensions
  • Materials and textures
  • Components and groups
  • Tags, scenes, and visibility
  • Keep the original 2025 model

Prepare a useful
2020 delivery.

Keep the editable model and the visual reference together so the recipient knows what the project should look like.

Before conversion

Keep an untouched 2025 master. Confirm the recipient uses 2020, identify the scenes and components they need, and save reference images of critical views. If your file exceeds 100 MiB, prepare a smaller delivery copy in SketchUp.

After conversion

Open the download in SketchUp 2020. Measure a known dimension, inspect component placement and textures, then cycle through scenes and tag visibility. Compare against the original before accepting the copy.

When sharing

Label the output with its target and revision, for example lobby-review-2020-r02.skp. Include reference images and a short note about any appearance differences. Keep separate LayOut documents and extension requirements in the delivery notes.

2025 to 2020 conversion FAQ

What to expect when preparing a newer SketchUp model for a legacy installation.

Can I convert a SketchUp 2025 file to SketchUp 2020?

Yes. Upload your SKP file, check its header, and choose SketchUp 2020 as the target. This page starts with 2020 selected. Conversion produces a separate SKP copy; keep your original and review the result in SketchUp 2020.

Why won't SketchUp 2020 open my 2025 model?

The .skp extension identifies the file type, not a universal format that every SketchUp release can read. SketchUp 2025 saves in the modern versionless format, while SketchUp 2020 expects an older, version-specific format. Its older reader cannot interpret the newer format. Create a 2020-format copy to address that mismatch, then check the model in 2020; conversion does not add 2025 features to the older software.

Can I use Save As in SketchUp 2025 to save a 2020 file?

Current SketchUp releases no longer offer saving to older, unsupported SKP formats. This converter provides a separate conversion workflow for creating a legacy SKP copy. See the official saving guidance linked above.

Will my textures, components, and scenes be preserved?

Conversion is not guaranteed to be lossless. Check geometry, dimensions, materials, textures, components, tags, and scenes in SketchUp 2020. Features introduced after 2020 may behave differently or be unavailable.

Is the 2025 to 2020 converter free?

Version checking is free. Each signed-in account gets one free successful conversion; After that, use available daily check-in rewards or active Premium. Upload one SKP file at a time, up to 100 MiB. Shared processing capacity can mean you need to retry when the processor is busy.

Will SketchUp 2025 PBR materials look the same in 2020?

Do not expect the same appearance. The 2025 release introduced Photoreal Materials and Environments that are not available as those tools in 2020. Check the converted model's visible materials and textures, and include reference images if the intended finish or lighting matters.

Does conversion make SketchUp 2020 faster or add 2025 features?

No. Conversion changes the model file format. It does not update the receiving application, add newer rendering tools, or guarantee a smaller file or better performance. Model complexity and the recipient's hardware still matter.

Should I always choose 2020 when sharing a 2025 model?

Choose 2020 when the recipient specifically needs SketchUp 2020. If both parties can work in a compatible modern version, first try the original SKP. Confirm the recipient's application version before making a legacy copy.

Does this also convert LayOut files and extensions?

No. This tool processes .skp model files only. A separate .layout document, extension installation, or external asset needs its own compatibility check and delivery plan.

Are my files uploaded?

Selecting a file keeps it on your device. Checking its version and converting it each upload the full file to our processor. There is no saved file history. Read the privacy policy for processing and transport details.
