The same .skp extension
SketchUp 2025 saves in the modern versionless format. SketchUp 2018 uses an older, version-specific reader. Even a simple model can encounter a newer-version error when saved in a format that reader cannot interpret.
Keep designing in 2025. Prepare an editable SKP copy for someone working in SketchUp 2018, with clear guidance on file compatibility and the model details to review.
SketchUp 2018 is selected for this workflow. Check the uploaded file's actual version, then convert and download.
Upload a model, choose its destination, and download your SKP copy.
One .skp file · up to 100 MiB
Selecting a file keeps it on your device. Checking or converting uploads the full file to our processor. Read how files are handled.
A legacy SKP copy for your destination SketchUp version.
Upload and check your file to enable conversion.
A shared extension does not mean a shared file format. The older application needs a format its file reader understands.
SketchUp 2025 saves in the modern versionless format. SketchUp 2018 uses an older, version-specific reader. Even a simple model can encounter a newer-version error when saved in a format that reader cannot interpret.
Modern-format compatibility does not promise support in every historical SketchUp release. 2018 belongs to the legacy generation. Renaming the file or placing 2018 in its name cannot change that boundary.
Conversion rewrites a separate SKP for the selected target format. Open that copy in 2018 to check the result. Rewriting the format does not give the older application newer rendering or modeling tools.
See SketchUp's saving and format guidance and newer-version error guide. That error alone does not prove corruption. For viewing, the official guide suggests a current release or SketchUp for Web; editing in 2018 needs a separately tested legacy copy.
Pick the destination version for a real recipient or project requirement.
A team may need a newer furniture or building component in a project managed in 2018. Convert the asset, verify dimensions and component information, then import it into a copy of the receiving project.
If a client works in 2018, screenshots alone may not meet their needs. A converted SKP gives them a model to test and edit in their environment. Agree on required edits and views, and keep the 2025 source as the master.
A project may have an agreed 2018 delivery format for consultants or shared workstations. Use a named revision and compare dimensions and scene states before sharing. Conversion does not validate the recipient's extensions or external assets.
Understand the tools behind the source model before accepting its legacy copy.
SketchUp 2025 introduces Photoreal Materials, PBR texture generation, and Environments. Apply Tags to Scenes adds a visibility workflow, while updated Trimble Connect tools help exchange models.
Deliver reference images of important finishes and lighting. The older application cannot reproduce the 2025 Photoreal Materials and Environments tools.
SketchUp Pro 2018 introduced Advanced Attributes for components and aggregation in Generate Report. Component information can support schedules, quantities, and project documentation.
Inspect important component attributes and any reports you rely on. Successful SKP conversion alone does not verify quantities or attribute preservation.
Feature sources: official SketchUp 2025 release notes and official SketchUp 2018 release information. The delivery checks are practical recommendations, not verified guarantees about preservation by this converter.
Opening a file and preserving its intended appearance are separate checks.
| Area | SketchUp 2025 | SketchUp 2018 | Delivery check |
|---|---|---|---|
| File format | Modern versionless SKP | Legacy SketchUp 2018 SKP | Confirm the downloaded copy opens in the actual destination installation. |
| Visual presentation | Photoreal Materials and Environments | The older application's display tools | Deliver reference images of important finishes and lighting. The older application cannot reproduce the 2025 Photoreal Materials and Environments tools. |
| Component attributes and schedules | Review the source model before delivery. | SketchUp Pro 2018 introduced Advanced Attributes for components and aggregation in Generate Report. Component information can support schedules, quantities, and project documentation. | Compare component names, instance counts, and important attributes against the source before using them in a report. |
| Project dependencies | May include extension data and linked documents. | Needs its own compatible tools and assets. | Deliver separate documents and verify extension requirements independently. |
Keep your 2025 master. Choose a .skp file up to 100 MiB and check its actual file-header version. Header detection does not validate the complete model.
Confirm SketchUp 2018 is selected and start conversion. Keep the page open while processing. You can cancel the request or retry if shared capacity is busy.
Save the output as a separate copy, open it in SketchUp 2018, and compare a known dimension, materials, component placement, and scenes with the original.
Compare component names, instance counts, and important attributes against the source before using them in a report. Include reference views and note any known differences. Conversion does not guarantee lossless results.
Answers for this specific model handoff.
Yes. Upload one SKP file up to 100 MiB, check its file-header version, then convert it to SketchUp 2018. This page preselects 2018, but you can change the target. Keep the source and inspect the converted copy in the destination application.
SketchUp 2025 writes the modern versionless SKP format. The older 2018 reader expects a legacy format. The same .skp extension does not make these formats interchangeable. A legacy conversion addresses that format mismatch without adding newer application features.
Current SketchUp releases no longer offer saving to older unsupported SKP formats. Use a separate conversion workflow when a recipient specifically needs a legacy file. Renaming a file or changing the filename's year does not rewrite its internal format.
Do not assume that conversion validates project data. Compare component attributes and quantities with the source model, and generate a fresh report in the receiving installation before relying on it for schedules or estimates.
Lossless conversion is not guaranteed. Check geometry, units, materials, components, and scenes in SketchUp 2018. Compare component names, instance counts, and important attributes against the source before using them in a report. Conversion does not install extensions or convert separate LayOut documents.
Each signed-in account gets one free successful conversion; further conversions use available daily check-in rewards or active Premium. Selecting a file keeps it local; checking and converting each upload the full file to our processor. There is no saved file history. See the privacy policy for processing and transport details. Shared processing capacity may require a retry.
A different file format does not guarantee better performance or a smaller model. Geometry, texture sizes, hardware, and application capabilities still determine how the model behaves. Test your delivery copy on the recipient's actual setup.
Choose the target the recipient actually requires. If both parties can use a compatible modern SketchUp release, try the original file first. Make a legacy copy when it is needed for the agreed editing or delivery workflow.
